Oktoberfest
Oktoberfest is the world’s largest, Volksfest (“people’s festival”). It is held annually in Munich, Bavaria, running from late September through the 1st Sunday in October. The festival features music, dancing, and beer drinking.
History
On October 12, 1810, the people of Munich were invited to join in the celebration of the marriage of the crown prince of Bavaria by participating in a festival set in the fields in front of the city gates. This festival was such a success that the city of Munich began supporting it as an annual tradition.
Today, there are Oktoberfest celebrations all over the world. Some places cannot wait a whole year, so they also have “Halfway to Oktoberfest” festivals in April.
Music
Polka (oom-pah) and waltz (oom-pah-pah) music are characterized by a tuba on the down-beats and trumpet or trombone on the off-beats. This music is often derived from old Bavarian folk songs.
Instruments
The clarinet, trumpet, trombone, and tuba were all invented in the early 1800’s. The use of 2 clarinets, trumpet, trombone and tuba created a standard instrumentation for early Oktoberfest bands. For a more mellow sound, flugelhorn and euphonium are often substituted for trumpet and trombone, respectively.
